Basnet is the deputy general secretary of the CPN (Maoist Centre). He started his political journey in student politics in 2041 BS. Basnet was directly elected from Jajarkot-11 in the 2070 BS and 2074 BS polls. He has held the responsibilities of Minister of Health and Population in 2068 BS, Minister of Home Affairs in 2072 BS and Minister of Forest and Environment in 2074 BS.
