Gurung started her political journey in 2046 BS and became district secretary of the Nepal Students Union in 2048 BS. She was the party's representative in the general convention held in 2062 BS. Gurung was elected central committee member of the party thrice in 2067 BS, 2072 BS and 2078 BS. She was elected constituent assembly member in 2064 BS and 2070 BS through the proportional representational system. Gurung served as State Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport in 2074 BS.
