Kirati entered student politics in 2046 BS. In 2074, he became a central committee member of the then UCPN (Maoist Centa re) and central member of the Nepal Communist Party in 2075 BS. He was elected from Bhojpur-2 in the constituent assembly elections held in 2064 BS and from the same district in the House of Representatives polls held in 2074 BS.
