Following the end of the partyless Panchayat system towards the end of 2046B.S, the former heads(panchas) started a discussion to form an alliance and start a party. The former heads were unable to unify from the very start and ended up branching into two.
While one branch was led by the former prime minister Surya Bahadur Deuba, the other was led by Lokendra Bahadur Chand. Both of these groups elected their own members as the party presidents and formed Rastriya Prajatantra Party-RPP(Thapa) and RPP(Chand).
In the years that followed, there was repeated unification and separation between the two branches. Rajendra Lingden is the current party chairman and their election symbol is a “ plough”.
